Caring for your Florida Lawn during cold weather
Chilly temperatures presents several challenges for Florida Lawns. Pay attention to freeze warnings and cover plants or bring them indoors during temperatures that dip into the low 30s. Fortunately in Southwest Florida that only happens a handful of times during a year. The best thing is to cover them before dusk to trap warmer air around the plant that should protect the delicate leaves and stems from freeze damage.
To protect your grass, give it a good watering AFTER 4pm. Watering also works when covering plants isn’t possible for hedges and other large landscape groupings. Watering helps to raise the temperature of the soil before a freeze and helps to insulate the grass blades and the root system and will protect it from frost damage. Once the water freezes it keeps the temperature from dropping lower and minimizes the damage to the turf grasses.
With these simple tips your Florida Landscape should come through the freezes with minimal damage!
